Teaching Notes - BlueSky Airlines: Single-Leg Revenue Management (A-C)

چکیده

Introduction These cases focus on the revenue management of a single flight leg with two fare classes and uncertain demand. The (A) Case asks the students to forecast high-fare demand and implement a simple bookinglimit policy. The (B) Case uses simulation to establish booking limits in the presence of buy-up behavior and cancellations. The (C) Case focuses on the spiral-down effect, which occurs when there is a mismatch between the revenue management optimization model and actual customer behavior. This Teaching Note first describes the logistics for using the cases: the order of the cases, choosing assignments, and the timing of class discussions. Then the note summarizes each case, describes potential solutions, and provides guidelines for class discussions. The last section describes technical background, extensions, and additional reference material. The final section may be particularly useful for instructors without a strong background in revenue management as the section or its references may provide answers to students’ questions about the implementation of revenue management systems. The final section also explains how the models in this case may be adapted to handle multileg itineraries in an airline network, as described in the BlueSky Airlines: Network Revenue Management Case Series.

Revenue Management Games: Horizontal and Vertical Competition

A well-studied problem in the literature on airline revenue (or yield) management is the optimal allocation of seat inventory among fare classes given a demand distribution for each class. In practice, the seat allocation decisions of one airline affect the passenger demands for seats on other airlines. In this paper we examine the seat inventory control problem under both horizontal competitio...

Simulation optimization for revenue management of airlines with cancellations and overbooking

This paper develops a model-free simulation-based optimization model to solve a seat-allocation problem arising in airlines. The model is designed to accommodate a number of realistic assumptions for real-world airline systems—in particular, allowing cancellations of tickets by passengers and overbooking of planes by carriers. The simulation–optimization model developed here can be used to solv...

A Duality Based Approach for Network Revenue Management in Airline Alliances

In this paper, we develop a revenue management model for airline alliances. In particular, our model allows the members of the alliance to decide how to share the revenues from itineraries spanning flight legs operated by multiple airlines and how to coordinate their capacity allocation decisions. We start with a deterministic linear programming approximation to the revenue management problem t...

Network capacity management under competition

We consider capacity management games between airlines who transport passengers over a joint airline network. Passengers are likely to purchase alternative tickets of the same class from competing airlines if they do not get tickets from their preferred airlines. We propose a Nash and a generalized Nash game model to address the competitive network revenue management problem. These two models a...

Alliance Revenue Management in Practice : Techniques and Simulation Analysis

The primary motivations for the formation of airline alliances have been to increase revenues and decrease costs for alliance partners. A major advantage comes through increase in the number of destinations served by an airline at little costs, by using codesharing. Airlines share seat inventory on each other's codeshare flights which complicates their revenue management practice and leads to s...
